Quiet Hydraulic Actuators for LIGO

چکیده

Interferometric gravitational wave detection relies on precisely monitoring the distance between the test masses at the end of each arm which, conveniently, also serve as the end mirrors of the interferometer. For terrestrial detectors, this measurement is corrupted by seismic noise that is several orders of magnitude larger than the anticipated gravitational wave induced motion [1]. To reduce this disturbance and maintain the test mass at its operating point, the test mass is suspended from an alignment and isolation system. This system consists of several stages of isolation to effectively mitigate broadband seismic disturbances (Figure 2). The test mass hangs from a passive pendulum system which is supported by a multistage isolation and alignment system. At the Livingston site, external to the vacuum system, is the pre-isolator system which is intended to suppress large amplitude, low-frequency disturbances and maintain the interferometer at its operating point. This paper focuses on the design of the pre-isolator actuator and the control of the pre-isolator system.

Seismic isolation enhancements for initial and Advanced LIGO

A seismic isolation system for the proposed 'Advanced LIGO' detector upgrade is under development. It consists of a two-stage in-vacuum active isolation platform that is supported by an external hydraulic actuation stage. A full-scale preliminary-design technology demonstrator of the in-vacuum platform has been assembled and is being tested at Stanford's engineering test facility. Unanticipated...

Analysis of Innovative Design of Energy Efficient Hydraulic Actuators

Hydraulic cylinder actuators are used extensively in industrial, construction and agricultural works. The small sized outlet ports of the cylinders resist the flow of discharged oil; and as a result the piston motion is slowed down. This causes a lot of heat generation and energy loss within the actuators. The study investigates and analyzes the possibilities of reducing the hydraulic resistanc...

Pneumatic and hydraulic microactuators: a review

The development of MEMS actuators is rapidly evolving and continuously new progress in terms of efficiency, power and force output is reported. Pneumatic and hydraulic are an interesting class of microactuators that are easily overlooked. Despite the 20 years of research, and hundreds of publications on this topic, these actuators are only popular in microfluidic systems. In other MEMS applicat...

Noise Control for Fluid Power Systems

Pressure pulsation, created by the operation of hydraulic pumps in a fluid power system, is one of the primary causes of noise issues from hydraulic machinery. The wave energy resulting from such pulsation propagates in both the wall and the fluid of the flow pipes associated with the fluid power systems, inducing fluid borne vibration of the pipes and the consequent noise radiated from the pip...

Hydraulic External Pre-Isolator System for LIGO

The Hydraulic External Pre-Isolator (HEPI) is the first 6 degrees of freedom active seismic isolation system implemented at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO). Implementation was first completed at the LIGO Livingston Observatory (LLO) prior to LIGO’s 5th science run, successfully cutting down the disturbance seen by LLO’s suspended optics in the two most prominent s...
